Also in the lineup was Washington native Emmanuel Burriss, making his first start in front of his hometown fans. Burriss has been a notable story this year as he is the first player from the D.C. public schools to play in the Major Leagues since 1981.
"I'm sure all his friends and family are excited to see him start, and I know he is," Bochy said. "He's played very well defensively. I put him at second [Saturday] night, and he made a good defensive play. It was great game awareness for him."
Burriss has had a cheering section of a few hundred friends and family members all weekend and was honored in a ceremony Saturday at the park where he used to play Little League ball.
Hot hot hot: The first-pitch temperature for today's day game is forecast to be 95 degrees, with humidity. Bochy plans to get some young legs in the lineup, including shortstop Emmanuel Burriss and second baseman Travis Denker.
Burriss would start in front of 100 to 200 friends and relatives expected to attend. Many attended a picnic for Burriss at the D.C. park at which he played Little League. He was presented with a City Council proclamation declaring Saturday as Emmanuel Burriss Day.
And Saturday, unofficially, will be Emmanuel Burriss day. Hundreds of coaches, teammates, friends and family members are expected to gather at Friendship Park for a picnic and celebration.
"Everybody says they're his coach now, everybody knows Manny, everybody is responsible for his success," Saah said. "But the main person has always been his father."
